Amstelveen: Suburban Municipality with a Japanese Community South of Amsterdam
Amstelveen has roughly 79,600 residents and borders Amsterdam to the south. The municipality developed from a polder village into a prosperous residential suburb during the 20th century, particularly after the construction of social housing and later private developments in the 1960s and 1970s. The Stadshart Amstelveen shopping centre, covered and car-free, serves as the commercial focus.
A notable feature is the substantial Japanese community, one of the largest in Europe, drawn by the presence of Japanese corporate offices near Schiphol airport. Japanese shops, restaurants, and a Saturday school cater to this population. The Cobra Museum of Modern Art, named after the post-war art movement founded by Karel Appel, Constant, and Corneille among others, sits on the Sandbergplein.
Schiphol airport lies immediately west. The Amsterdamse Bos, a large recreational forest park, stretches across the boundary between Amsterdam and Amstelveen. The tramline from Amstelveen to Amsterdam Zuid station takes about 25 minutes.
