Assendelft has about 24,230 residents and lies in the Zaanstreek region of North Holland, part of the gemeente Zaanstad. The village stretches along the Nauernasche Vaart and surrounding polders. Before the Zaanstad merger in 1974, Assendelft was a separate municipality with a long agricultural history. Dairy farming on the peat polders was the traditional livelihood, and the characteristic wooden houses of the Zaanstreek can still be found along older streets.
The painter Saenredam, known for his precise church interiors, took his surname from the area. The Assendelver Polders, flat grassland intersected by ditches, stretch west toward the dunes. Residential growth from the 1990s onward expanded the village considerably with the Saendelft neighbourhood.
Zaandam is about 8 kilometres south. Amsterdam is roughly 20 kilometres southeast. Krommenie borders to the north.
