Castricum has about 35,300 inhabitants and lies in the Kennemerland dune area of North Holland. The North Holland Dune Reserve, one of the largest protected dune landscapes in the country, stretches directly west of the village to the sea. Walking and cycling routes through the reserve require a permit from the water company PWN, which manages the area for drinking water extraction and nature conservation.
During the Second World War, the German occupiers built an extensive bunker complex in the dunes as part of the Atlantic Wall. Several bunkers survive and some are accessible. The village centre around the Dorpsstraat has a quiet residential character. Castricum aan Zee, the beach settlement, draws day visitors in summer.
Alkmaar is about 10 kilometres north. Beverwijk lies roughly 5 kilometres south. Haarlem is approximately 20 kilometres further south. The railway station provides a direct connection to Amsterdam in about 30 minutes.
