Diemen: Compact Municipality Wedged Between Amsterdam and the A1
Diemen has roughly 24,360 residents and lies in North Holland directly southeast of Amsterdam. The municipality is almost entirely surrounded by Amsterdam's territory, giving it a somewhat enclosed character. The Diemerzeedijk, a historic dike, marks the original settlement along the Diem river. Much of the current built-up area dates from post-war expansion, particularly the high-rise Diemerpark neighbourhood.
The Diemerbos, a young forest planted on former landfill, provides unexpected green space. Holland Park, a recent mixed-use development at the A10 interchange, has added a cluster of residential towers. Amsterdam-Bijlmer ArenA station is just across the municipal border, offering metro and train connections.
Amsterdam Centraal is about 10 kilometres northwest by metro. Weesp lies roughly 5 kilometres east. Schiphol airport is approximately 15 kilometres southwest.
