Enkhuizen has about 17,365 residents and lies in North Holland on a peninsula jutting into the IJsselmeer. The town was one of the most important harbours of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) in the 17th century, and the wealth of that era is still visible in the Drommedaris defence tower, the Stadhuis, and the patrician houses along the Westerstraat. The double harbour remains active for pleasure sailing.
The Zuiderzeemuseum, an open-air and indoor museum, reconstructs life in the former Zuiderzee fishing communities before the Afsluitdijk closed off the sea in 1932. The Enkhuizerzand recreation beach lies on the IJsselmeer shore. The town's population declined sharply after the Zuiderzee was dammed, as fishing collapsed and trade shifted elsewhere. Seed cultivation and bulb processing became alternative economic activities. The Markermeer dike connects Enkhuizen to Lelystad across the water.
Hoorn is about 20 kilometres southwest. Lelystad lies roughly 25 kilometres east across the Markermeer. Medemblik is approximately 15 kilometres north.
