Heemskerk: Slot Assumburg and a Beach Between Steel and Dunes
Heemskerk has about 39,200 residents and lies in the Kennemerland area of North Holland, between the dunes along the coast and the industrial zone around Beverwijk and IJmuiden. Slot Assumburg, a medieval castle dating from the 13th century, now operates as a youth hostel and cultural venue. The Heemskerkse duinen provide coastal walking and cycling routes within the broader Zuid-Kennemerland landscape.
Despite its position near the Tata Steel complex in Velsen, the beach at Heemskerk aan Zee offers a stretch of North Sea sand. The town grew substantially in the 1960s and 1970s as a residential area for workers at the steel plant and in the Kennemerland region. The Marquette estate, with its gardens, adds green space to the built-up area.
Beverwijk borders to the north. Haarlem is approximately 15 kilometres south. Alkmaar lies about 20 kilometres northwest.
