Huizen lies on the shore of the Gooimeer in the province of North Holland with about 41,300 inhabitants. Before the closure of the Zuiderzee by the Afsluitdijk in 1932, Huizen was a fishing village on the open sea. The traditional Huizer klederdracht, a distinctive local costume, was worn into the 1960s by some residents. The old harbour area has been redeveloped but the Botterwerf still maintains traditional fishing boats.
The town transitioned to a residential commuter municipality serving Amsterdam and Hilversum. The Gooimeer, now a freshwater lake separated from the IJsselmeer, offers sailing and windsurfing. The Fransche Kampheide, a small nature reserve on the edge of the Gooi, provides heathland walking.
Hilversum is about 10 kilometres south. Almere lies across the water to the north, connected by the A27 motorway. Naarden and Bussum border to the west and south.
