IJmuiden lies at the western end of the North Sea Canal in the gemeente Velsen, North Holland, with roughly 31,900 residents. The Zeesluis IJmuiden, completed in 2022, is the largest sea lock in the world by chamber volume and allows the biggest cargo vessels to pass between the North Sea and Amsterdam's port. The older locks from the 19th and early 20th century still function alongside it.
IJmuiden's fishing harbour is one of the main landing points for North Sea fish in the Netherlands. The Vispoor, a fish auction route, connects the harbour to the processing facilities. The Forteiland IJmuiden, an artificial island fortress built between 1880 and 1885 to defend the canal entrance, can be visited by ferry.
The beach at IJmuiden aan Zee faces west and catches the full force of North Sea weather. Haarlem is about 15 kilometres south. The Tata Steel plant stretches along the canal to the east. Amsterdam is accessible by road in about 30 minutes.
