Naarden: Star Fortress and Comenius Town in the Gooi
Naarden has about 17,115 residents and lies in North Holland within the gemeente Gooise Meren since 2016. The town is renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved star-shaped fortress, complete with double moats, bastions, and ravelins. The fortifications date from the 17th century and are among the best examples of military architecture in the Netherlands. The Nederlands Vestingmuseum, housed in a bastion, documents the town's defensive history.
The Grote Kerk hosts an annual performance of Bach's Matthaus-Passion on Good Friday, a tradition maintained since 1922. Jan Amos Comenius, the Czech educational reformer, spent his final years in Naarden and is buried in the Waalse Kapel. The Naardermeer, directly west of town, is the oldest nature reserve in the Netherlands, managed by Natuurmonumenten since 1906. The Gooimeer lake borders Naarden to the north.
Hilversum is about 8 kilometres south. Amsterdam lies roughly 20 kilometres west. Bussum, now also part of Gooise Meren, is adjacent to the southeast.
