Uithoorn has roughly 26,850 residents and lies in the province of North Holland along the Amstel river, south of Amstelveen. The town's location on the Amstel and the Drecht river system historically linked it to Amsterdam's waterway network. The Zijdelwaard neighbourhood, developed in the 1970s, accounts for much of the residential growth. The old village core along the Amstel retains some character with the Thamerkerk and surrounding houses.
The De Ronde Venen polder landscape stretches to the east, one of the lowest-lying areas in the country. The Amstel flows north through Uithoorn toward Amsterdam. Aalsmeer, home to the world's largest flower auction, borders directly to the north.
Amsterdam is about 15 kilometres north. Schiphol airport lies roughly 10 kilometres northwest. Mijdrecht is approximately 5 kilometres east.
