Velsen-Zuid is part of the gemeente Velsen with a combined municipal population of roughly 67,800. The area is dominated by the Tata Steel plant (formerly Hoogovens), one of the largest integrated steelworks in Europe, whose blast furnaces and rolling mills stretch along the North Sea Canal for several kilometres. The factory was founded in 1918 and has shaped local employment and landscape ever since.
The North Sea Canal, opened in 1876, connects Amsterdam's harbour to the sea at IJmuiden, passing through Velsen's territory. The IJmuiden sluice complex includes the Zeesluis IJmuiden, completed in 2022, which is the largest sea lock in the world by volume. Haarlem is about 10 kilometres south.
Despite the heavy industry, the dune landscape of the Kennemerland national park begins just west of the built-up area, offering coastal walking routes within minutes of the steel plant. Bloemendaal aan Zee and the beach are accessible in under 15 minutes.
