Zaanstad is a municipality of about 140,100 residents north of Amsterdam in the province of North Holland. It was formed in 1974 by merging Zaandam, Koog aan de Zaan, Zaandijk, Wormerveer, Krommenie, Assendelft, and Westzaan. The Zaan river runs through the municipality and once powered hundreds of industrial windmills that made the area the first industrialised region in Europe, processing timber, paint, paper, and oil from the 17th century onward.
The Zaanse Schans, a collection of relocated historic windmills and wooden houses along the Zaan, is the most visited open-air site in the region. Zaandam's centre has been redeveloped with the Inntel Hotels building, a stacked composition of traditional Zaan-style house facades in green.
The cocoa and chocolate industry left a lasting mark. Verkade operated here for over a century, and the Albert Heijn supermarket chain started as a small grocery shop in Oostzaan in 1887. Amsterdam Centraal is reachable by train from Zaandam in under 15 minutes.
