Delden and the Twickel Estate
Kasteel Twickel, one of the largest private estates in the Netherlands, borders Delden to the northwest. The castle grounds cover some 4,000 hectares of woodland, farmland, and formal gardens that are occasionally open to the public. Delden itself is a small Overijssel town of about 6,920 residents, positioned between Hengelo (7 km east) and Goor (6 km west) along the old Twentse road.
Salt extraction once shaped the local economy. The Nana Fonds saltworks operated near Delden until the mid-20th century. Today the town serves as a residential centre within gemeente Hof van Twente, with a weekly market and a modest row of shops along the Langestraat.
The surrounding Twente landscape of hedgerow fields, scattered farms, and sunken lanes is typical for this part of eastern Overijssel. Cycling routes through the Twickel estate connect Delden to Beckum and Ambt Delden.
