Haaksbergen: Textile Heritage and Cross-Border Twente
Haaksbergen has roughly 24,140 inhabitants and lies in the southeast of Twente in Overijssel, close to the German border. Textile manufacturing was the economic backbone through the 20th century, with the Jannink and Jordaan weaving mills among the largest employers. The Museum Buurt Spoorweg operates a heritage steam tramway running between Haaksbergen and Boekelo, using restored rolling stock on a narrow-gauge track.
The Twente landscape here is a mix of small fields, hedgerows, and scattered farmsteads. The Stepelerberg, a low wooded hill, and the Buurserzand heathland offer walking routes. The German town of Ahaus is about 15 kilometres east. Enschede lies roughly 12 kilometres north.
