Hellendoorn: Salland Hills and a Theme Park
Avonturenpark Hellendoorn draws about 600,000 visitors per year, making it one of the Netherlands' mid-sized amusement parks. The park sits in the wooded Sallandse Heuvelrug area south of the village. Hellendoorn itself has roughly 8,400 residents and serves as one of two main settlements in the gemeente Hellendoorn, alongside Nijverdal.
The Sallandse Heuvelrug national park, established in 2004, protects dry heathland and oak-birch forest on the glacial ridge running southeast-northwest. The Regge river valley lies east. This combination of hills, forest, and river makes the area popular with recreational cyclists. Nijverdal, the larger town, is about 4 kilometres east and has the rail station connecting to Almelo and Zwolle.
