Directly across the IJssel from Kampen, connected by the Molenbrug, IJsselmuiden stretches along the old dike road on the river's east bank. About 12,670 residents live here within the gemeente Kampen, in what functions partly as a residential extension of the larger town and partly as a settlement with its own shops, schools, and sports clubs.
The Kampereiland, the island formed by the IJssel delta, surrounds IJsselmuiden to the north and east. This is a distinctive agricultural landscape of narrow strips and drainage channels. The Grafhorst polder to the north is traditional dairy farming land. The Hervormde Kerk in the old village centre dates back several centuries. Kampen is about 2 kilometres west, Zwolle roughly 15 kilometres south.
