Rijssen: Orthodox Reformed Town with a Textile Background in Twente
Rijssen has about 27,740 inhabitants and lies in the western part of Twente in Overijssel. The town is known as one of the most orthodox Reformed communities in the eastern Netherlands, with strict Sunday observance and high church attendance. Jute processing and textile manufacturing shaped the local economy through the 20th century, with firms like Ter Horst & Co producing rope and carpet backing.
Rijssen merged with Holten in 2003 to form the gemeente Rijssen-Holten. The Reggesprong, a park along the Regge river, provides walking routes. The Rijsserberg, a low hill on the town's eastern edge, offers modest elevation. The old centre around the Haarstraat has a compact commercial area.
Almelo is about 15 kilometres northeast. Deventer lies roughly 25 kilometres west. The Holterberg and Sallandse Heuvelrug, forested hills to the south, are accessible for hiking.
