Staphorst: Traditionally Reformed Village with Distinctive Farm Architecture
Staphorst has about 15,765 residents and lies in Overijssel south of Zwolle. The village is known throughout the Netherlands for its conservative Reformed Protestant community and the distinctive green-and-blue painted farmhouses that line the long ribbon village. Staphorst stretches several kilometres along the road in a linear pattern. Traditional dress is still worn by some residents, particularly on Sundays. Sunday rest is observed more strictly here than in most Dutch municipalities.
The farmhouses, with their characteristic colour scheme and hallenhuisboerderij layout, are protected as cultural heritage. The Museumboerderij Staphorst gives visitors a look inside a traditional farm interior. The municipality also includes the village of Rouveen to the north. Zwolle is about 12 kilometres north. Meppel lies roughly 10 kilometres south. The A28 motorway passes directly through the municipality.
