Canal-side peat cutting created Vroomshoop in the 19th century. Like many veenkolonien in the eastern Netherlands, the village grew along a straight canal dug for peat extraction and drainage. The Overijssels Kanaal still runs through the settlement, giving it a distinctive linear layout. About 8,480 people live here, in the gemeente Twenterand, between Almelo and Hardenberg.
After peat extraction ended, the land was converted to agriculture. Sand and dairy farming remain present, though many residents now commute to Almelo (12 km west) or other Twente towns for work. Vroomshoop expanded with social housing in the 1950s and 1960s, and newer estates followed in the 1990s. The surrounding flat landscape offers long sightlines across farmland, broken by rows of trees along ditches and canal banks.
