Wijhe on the IJssel
Flooding shaped Wijhe's history. The village lies on the east bank of the IJssel, and high water events have repeatedly tested its defences. The most recent major scare came during the 1995 river floods when parts of the region were evacuated. About 8,200 residents live here, in the gemeente Olst-Wijhe, between Deventer (15 km south) and Zwolle (20 km north).
The IJssel floodplain west of Wijhe has been partly rewilded under the Room for the River programme, allowing controlled flooding while creating new nature. The Boerhaar estate and surrounding farmland stretch east toward the Salland ridge. A ferry crosses the IJssel to Herxen. Wijhe's centre clusters around the Reformed church and the main street, with a weekly Friday market.
