Alphen aan den Rijn counts about 70,300 inhabitants and lies in South Holland at the point where the Oude Rijn passes through the Groene Hart, the open agricultural area encircled by the Randstad cities. A Roman fort, Albaniana, once stood here at a Rhine crossing, and archaeological finds from the site are displayed in the Archeon theme park nearby, which reconstructs prehistoric, Roman, and medieval settlements.
Avifauna, a bird park that has operated since 1950, sits on the northern bank of the river. The town grew significantly after 1945 when new residential areas were built to accommodate workers commuting to The Hague, Leiden, and Amsterdam. The Zegersloot recreation area south of the centre provides a lake for swimming and watersports.
Leiden is approximately 15 kilometres west. Gouda lies about 20 kilometres east. The A4 motorway passes just west of the town.
