Barendrecht: Greenhouse Municipality Below Rotterdam
Barendrecht has roughly 38,700 residents and lies in South Holland directly south of Rotterdam. The municipality is known for its greenhouse horticulture, with large glasshouse complexes producing vegetables, particularly tomatoes and peppers. The ZuidHolland greenhouse corridor stretches through this area toward the Westland.
Barendrecht is crossed by major infrastructure: the A15 and A29 motorways, the Betuweroute freight railway, and the HSL-Zuid high-speed line all pass through or near the built-up area. The Carnisselande neighbourhood, built from the 1990s onward, is one of the newer Vinex residential developments. The older village centre around the Dorpsstraat and the Hervormde Kerk retains a more traditional feel.
Rotterdam is about 10 kilometres north. Ridderkerk borders to the east. The A15 corridor connects the port of Rotterdam to the German hinterland, making the area a constant stream of freight traffic.
