Benthuizen has about 18,959 residents and lies in South Holland within the gemeente Alphen aan den Rijn. The village sits in the low-lying Rijnland polder landscape between Zoetermeer and Waddinxveen. Originally a farming community, Benthuizen has grown as residential development spread from the larger surrounding towns. The Bentwoud, a recently planted forest between Benthuizen and Boskoop, is part of the Randstad Greenstructure project to create green buffers in the urbanised west.
The old village centre around the Dorpsstraat and the Hervormde Kerk is modest. Greenhouse horticulture, once a significant local activity, has partly given way to housing. The Rotte river area to the west connects to the recreational green corridors of the Rotterdam region. Residents largely commute to Zoetermeer, Gouda, or other Randstad cities.
Zoetermeer is about 5 kilometres west. Gouda lies roughly 12 kilometres east. Waddinxveen is approximately 5 kilometres northeast.
