Bergschenhoek has about 16,579 residents and lies in South Holland within the gemeente Lansingerland, formed in 2007. The village developed in the low-lying polder between Rotterdam and Zoetermeer. Until the late 20th century, greenhouse horticulture and dairy farming defined the area. Residential construction since the 1990s has transformed Bergschenhoek into a commuter settlement for Rotterdam and Den Haag.
The Bergse Plassen recreation area to the southwest, shared with the Rotterdam district of Hillegersberg, offers sailing and canoeing. The old village core around the Dorpsstraat and the Hervormde Kerk remains modestly intact. The Randstadrail connection at nearby Berkel en Rodenrijs station links the area to Den Haag and Rotterdam. The Rottemeren nature and recreation zone runs along the western edge of the village.
