Berkel en Rodenrijs has about 20,189 residents and lies in South Holland within the gemeente Lansingerland, formed in 2007. The area was historically dominated by greenhouse horticulture, particularly tomato and pepper cultivation. Much of the glass has been replaced by residential development since the early 2000s, as the Vinex-era expansion of the Rotterdam metropolitan area reached into this corridor.
The RandstadRail line connects Berkel en Rodenrijs to Rotterdam and Den Haag, giving it excellent public transport for a former village. The Berkelse Plas, a recreational lake, offers swimming and watersports. The old village centres of Berkel and Rodenrijs, originally separate settlements along the Rotte river, merged into one continuous built-up area during the 20th century. The Westpolder and Meerpolder districts represent the newest housing stock.
Rotterdam is about 10 kilometres south. Zoetermeer lies roughly 10 kilometres northeast. Den Haag is approximately 15 kilometres north.
