Bloemhof: Pre-War Neighbourhood on Rotterdam's South Bank
Bloemhof has about 13,715 residents and forms a neighbourhood within the gemeente Rotterdam in South Holland. The district lies in Rotterdam-Zuid, south of the Nieuwe Maas, and was built in the 1920s and 1930s. Streets are named after flowers, giving the neighbourhood its name. The housing consists of characteristic pre-war brick terraces with small front gardens, built for the working class employed in the nearby harbour and industries.
The Afrikaanderplein market, one of Rotterdam's largest outdoor markets held twice weekly, is adjacent to Bloemhof in the neighbouring Afrikaanderwijk. The Maashaven, a former harbour basin, borders the district to the north and is being redeveloped with housing and public space. The population is diverse, with residents from Surinamese, Turkish, Moroccan, and other backgrounds. The Rijnhaven metro station provides access to Rotterdam's centre.
Rotterdam's centre is about 3 kilometres north across the river. Feijenoord stadium is roughly 2 kilometres east. The Erasmusbrug is approximately 2 kilometres northwest.
