Wedged between the Noord and the Nieuwe Maas rivers, Bolnes occupies a narrow strip of land that gives it water on three sides. This position made shipbuilding a natural industry: the Boele shipyard operated here from 1854 until 1979, constructing hundreds of vessels. About 7,650 people live in Bolnes, a district of Ridderkerk in the heart of the South Holland river delta.
After the shipyard closed, the waterfront was partly redeveloped with housing. The neighbourhood retains a working-class character with compact row houses and a few apartment blocks. Views across the water to Rotterdam's Kop van Zuid skyline are visible from the riverside path. The Ridderkerk centre is about 3 kilometres east. Rotterdam is accessible via the A15 and A16 motorways.
The Bolnes ferry, crossing the Noord to Alblasserdam, operates daily and is free for pedestrians and cyclists. River flooding remains a concern; the 1953 disaster and the 1995 evacuation both left their mark on local memory.
