Hellevoetsluis: Naval Harbour Town on the Haringvliet

Hellevoetsluis counts about 21,927 residents and lies on the southern shore of the Haringvliet in South Holland, within the gemeente Voorne aan Zee since the 2023 merger. The town served as the home port of the Admiralty of the Maze from the 17th century and was a key naval base for centuries. The Droogdok, a dry dock from 1799, and the fortified harbour area are preserved remnants of this military past.

The Vestingmuseum Hellevoetsluis, housed in a former arsenal, documents the town's naval and military history. The Haringvliet dam, part of the Delta Works, closes off the estuary just north of town. Residential expansion in the 1990s and 2000s added several new districts, drawing commuters working in Rotterdam and the Europoort industrial zone. The old fortification walls now function as walking paths around the historic centre.

Rotterdam is about 30 kilometres northeast. Brielle lies roughly 8 kilometres northwest. The N57 connects the island to the A15 motorway via the Haringvlietbrug.
