Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht has about 21,027 residents and lies in South Holland as part of the Drechtsteden agglomeration. The municipality sits between the Noord and Waal rivers, directly east of Zwijndrecht. Originally an agricultural polder village, it has grown substantially since the 1980s with new residential districts built to accommodate families working in the Dordrecht-Rotterdam corridor.
The Sophiapolder, a nature development area on the river, provides green space and birdwatching opportunities along the Noord. The old village core around the Hervormde Kerk is small but still recognisable. The Volgerlanden district, developed in the 2000s, is one of the newer residential areas. Despite its growth, Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht has maintained a village atmosphere relative to its urban neighbours.
