Hillegom: Bulb-Growing Town in the Heart of the Bollenstreek
Hillegom has about 18,419 residents and lies in South Holland in the Bollenstreek, the flower bulb region between Haarlem and Leiden. The town is surrounded by bulb fields that burst into colour each spring with tulips, hyacinths, and daffodils. The centre along the Hoofdstraat is compact. The Keukenhof garden, the world-famous spring flower exhibition, lies partly within Hillegom's municipal borders though its entrance is in Lisse. The old dune landscape on the western edge, part of the Kennemerland dunes, provides nature walks. The Ringvaart canal encircles the Haarlemmermeer polder to the east, forming a clear boundary.
Haarlem is about 12 kilometres north. Leiden lies roughly 12 kilometres south. Schiphol airport is approximately 15 kilometres northeast.
