Hoogvliet is a deelgemeente of Rotterdam in South Holland with about 34,950 residents. The district was built in the 1950s and 1960s as housing for workers at the Shell Pernis refinery and the Europoort industrial zone. Much of the original housing stock was demolished and rebuilt from the late 1990s as part of one of the largest urban renewal projects in the Netherlands.
The district sits on a narrow strip between the Oude Maas river to the south and the petrochemical complexes of Pernis and Botlek to the north. Despite the industrial surroundings, the Oude Maas riverbank offers green space and the Gaatkensplas provides a local recreation lake. The original village core of Hoogvliet, with the Hervormde Kerk, predates the post-war development by centuries.
Rotterdam's centre is about 15 kilometres northeast. Spijkenisse lies directly south across the Oude Maas. The Botlek tunnel and metro line connect Hoogvliet to the rest of Rotterdam.
