Krimpen aan den IJssel has about 29,000 residents and lies in South Holland on the northern bank of the Hollandsche IJssel, directly east of Rotterdam. The Algerabrug and the Algerakering storm surge barrier are the most visible structures: the barrier, completed in 1958 as the first element of the Delta Works, protects the low-lying polders of South Holland from flooding via the river.
The municipality is largely residential, with inhabitants commuting to Rotterdam and the surrounding Krimpenerwaard. The old dijk along the river retains some historic houses. The Stormpolder business park on the western edge accommodates small and medium enterprises. Despite its proximity to Rotterdam, the IJssel side of Krimpen retains a polder village atmosphere.
Rotterdam is about 10 kilometres west. Gouda lies roughly 15 kilometres east. Capelle aan den IJssel borders directly to the west.
