Middelburg is the capital of Zeeland province with about 46,500 inhabitants. The Abdij van Middelburg, a former Premonstratensian abbey from the 12th century, houses the provincial government and the Zeeuws Museum. The Lange Jan tower, at 90 metres the tallest in Zeeland, rises from the abbey complex and offers a view across Walcheren island. The town was heavily bombed in May 1940 but the centre was carefully reconstructed afterward.
The VOC had its Zeeland chamber in Middelburg, making it one of six cities where the Dutch East India Company was administered. The Kloveniersdoelen on the Achter de Houttuinen recalls this trading past. The Thursday market on the Markt square has been held for centuries.
Vlissingen is about 8 kilometres south on the Westerschelde. Goes lies roughly 20 kilometres east. The Veerse Meer, a former sea arm closed off by the Delta Works, provides sailing and recreation north of the city.
