Naaldwijk: Commercial Heart of the Westland Greenhouse Region
Naaldwijk has about 17,753 residents and lies in the Westland area of South Holland, within the gemeente Westland since 2004. The town serves as the administrative centre of Westland and sits amid one of the most concentrated greenhouse horticultural areas in Europe. The former Westlandse Bloemenveiling, a flower auction, was based here before merging into the larger FloraHolland cooperative in Naaldwijk.
The old centre around the Markt and the Oude Kerk dates to the medieval period. The Westlands Museum documents the area's horticultural history and development. The flat landscape is almost entirely under glass or built up, with relatively little open green space compared to other parts of the Netherlands. The Haagweg connects Naaldwijk to Den Haag, while the N222 provides access toward Hoek van Holland.
Den Haag is about 12 kilometres northeast. Delft lies roughly 10 kilometres east. 's-Gravenzande is approximately 4 kilometres west.
