Noordwijk-Binnen: Space Agency Town in the Bollenstreek
Noordwijk-Binnen is the inland part of Noordwijk in South Holland, with the wider municipality counting about 24,360 inhabitants. The European Space Agency's technical centre ESTEC, the largest ESA establishment in Europe, is located here, employing thousands of engineers and scientists. This gives Noordwijk an international presence unusual for a town of its size.
The Bollenstreek, the bulb-growing region between Haarlem and Leiden, surrounds Noordwijk. In spring the fields fill with tulips, hyacinths, and daffodils. Noordwijk aan Zee, the coastal section, has a long sandy beach and a boulevard lined with hotels and conference centres. The Space Expo visitor centre, connected to ESTEC, displays spacecraft and satellite models.
Leiden is about 10 kilometres east. Haarlem lies roughly 20 kilometres north. The Keukenhof gardens in Lisse are approximately 5 kilometres south.
