Long before Rotterdam existed as a city, Overschie was already a farming settlement along the Schie river. Records mention the village from around 1100. Rotterdam absorbed it in 1941, and the post-war construction of the A13 motorway sliced through the district, dividing it into sections separated by concrete and noise barriers. About 6,710 residents live here.
Despite the motorway intrusion, Overschie retains a village-like core around the Overschiese Dorpsstraat and the Grote Kerk. The Ackerdijkse Plassen, a wetland reserve east of the district, provides an unexpected patch of open landscape within the Rotterdam metropolitan area. Birdwatchers use hides along the water to spot bitterns, marsh harriers, and bearded tits.
Rotterdam Centraal is about 5 kilometres south. Delft lies roughly 6 kilometres west. Rotterdam The Hague Airport is adjacent to the east, adding aircraft noise to the motorway soundtrack.
