Reeuwijk: Peat Lake Village in the Groene Hart
Peat lakes formed over centuries of extraction surround Reeuwijk on nearly all sides. The Reeuwijkse Plassen are now used for sailing, fishing, and swimming, with sections managed as nature reserves for reed bed birds and marshland species. About 12,817 people live across the village's two main settlement areas, Reeuwijk-Dorp and Reeuwijk-Brug, within the gemeente Bodegraven-Reeuwijk.
The Groene Hart designation protects the surrounding polder landscape from urban development, maintaining an open buffer between the Randstad cities. Dairy farming and horticulture continue in the surrounding polders. Many residents commute to Gouda, about 5 kilometres south. Bodegraven lies roughly 8 kilometres north.
