Rhoon has about 18,250 residents and lies on the island of IJsselmonde in South Holland, within the gemeente Albrandswaard. The village is centred around Kasteel Rhoon, a 14th-century moated castle that now operates as a restaurant and event venue. Despite its proximity to Rotterdam's port and industrial areas, Rhoon has maintained a relatively rural atmosphere with polders, farms, and tree-lined lanes on its southern side.
The Rhoonse Grienden, a willow coppice area along the Oude Maas, is a small nature reserve. The Koedood creek runs through the area. Portland, an industrial zone shared with Barendrecht, hosts logistics and distribution companies. The Portlandse Baan separates the residential areas from the industrial zone. Many residents commute to Rotterdam or the Europoort.
Rotterdam's centre is about 10 kilometres north. Barendrecht is directly adjacent to the east. Spijkenisse lies roughly 8 kilometres southwest across the Oude Maas.
