Ridderkerk has approximately 45,200 residents and occupies part of the IJsselmonde island in South Holland, surrounded by the Nieuwe Maas, Oude Maas, and Noord rivers. The municipality developed from a farming and fishing village into a residential town serving the greater Rotterdam area. The Rijksstraatweg, the old main road, still runs through the centre.
The Waalbos, a relatively young woodland created on former agricultural land, provides green space between the residential areas. Ridderkerk borders Rotterdam's Charlois district to the northwest and Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht to the south. The Van Brienenoordbrug, a major double-deck bridge, connects the island to northern Rotterdam.
Rotterdam's centre is about 10 kilometres northwest. Dordrecht lies roughly 10 kilometres south. The A15 and A16 motorways cross through the municipality, making it a traffic node for freight moving between the port of Rotterdam and the hinterland.
