Rijnsburg: Flower Auction Village Near the Coast
The Flora Holland flower auction in Rijnsburg was for decades one of the major wholesale hubs for Dutch cut flowers. Although auction operations have consolidated, the horticultural infrastructure remains: greenhouses, packing halls, and logistics firms. About 7,990 residents live in this South Holland village, merged into the gemeente Katwijk in 2006.
Rijnsburg's history reaches further back than flowers. The Counts of Holland maintained a residence here in the early Middle Ages, and an abbey, the Abdij van Rijnsburg, was founded around 1133. Spinoza lived in the village from 1661 to 1663, writing parts of his philosophical works in lodgings on the Spinozalaan. The North Sea beach at Katwijk is about 4 kilometres west. Leiden lies roughly 6 kilometres south.
