Squeezed between the Nieuwe Waterweg shipping canal and the Calandkanaal, surrounded by the Europoort and Botlek industrial zones, Rozenburg is an unlikely residential village. Yet about 12,420 people live here in a compact community with its own centre, shops, and green waterfront space. Since 2010 the village is part of the gemeente Rotterdam.
The Landtong Rozenburg, a green peninsula created from dredged material, provides walking paths with views of passing ocean-going vessels. The Maeslantkering storm surge barrier, part of the Delta Works, lies just to the west.
Many residents have historically worked in the surrounding petrochemical industry. The Botlektunnel and the Calandbrug provide road access. Rozenburg's isolated position gives it a character unlike any other part of Rotterdam.
The city centre is about 20 kilometres east. Hoek van Holland lies roughly 8 kilometres west. Brielle is approximately 10 kilometres south.
