Silver has defined Schoonhoven since the 17th century. The town remains the centre of the Dutch silver industry, with working silversmiths, gold and silver workshops, and the annual Zilverdag festival. The Nederlands Zilvermuseum documents this centuries-long tradition. About 12,352 people live in this fortified Lek river town, part of the gemeente Krimpenerwaard since 2015.
The old centre preserves its street pattern with the Stadhuis, the Grote Kerk, the Veerpoort river gate, and the Waag on the Markt. Ramparts are still partly visible. The surrounding Krimpenerwaard is flat dairy farmland crossed by ditches and narrow dike roads.
Gouda is about 15 kilometres north. Gorinchem lies roughly 20 kilometres east.
