Neolithic farmers of the Linear Pottery Culture settled near what is now Stein some 7,000 years ago, making this stretch of the Maas terrace one of the oldest inhabited areas in the Netherlands. The municipality of about 11,290 residents includes the villages of Elsloo, Urmond, and Berg aan de Maas. Elsloo is known for its preserved centre with half-timbered and limestone buildings perched on the terrace edge.
Steep terrace edges, loess soils, and orchards characterise the Maas valley here. The Grensmaas project has restored sections of the river to a more natural course. The Chemelot industrial complex in neighbouring Geleen provides employment for many residents. The Julianakanaal runs parallel to the Maas.
Sittard is about 5 kilometres north, Maastricht roughly 15 kilometres south.
