Ypenburg is a district in The Hague with about 30,000 residents, built from the late 1990s on the site of the former Vliegveld Ypenburg military airfield. The airfield saw action on 10 May 1940 when German paratroopers landed here during the invasion of the Netherlands, meeting fierce Dutch resistance. After the war the base continued in military use until closure in 1992.
The neighbourhood was developed as a Vinex location, one of the large-scale residential construction areas designated by the national government in the 1990s. Housing ranges from terraced family homes to apartments, with parks and water features integrated into the layout. The Laan van Ypenburg functions as the main axis.
The Hague's centre is about 7 kilometres west. Delft lies roughly 5 kilometres south. Zoetermeer is approximately 5 kilometres east. The A4 and A13 motorways converge nearby.
