Architect Willem van Tijen and urban planner Lotte Stam-Beese designed Zuidwijk in the early 1950s as one of Rotterdam's first large-scale post-war housing projects. The original layout featured open blocks, wide green strips, and a clear separation between housing and traffic. About 12,490 people now live in the district.
Major renewal since the 2000s has replaced many original flats with new construction offering a wider range of housing types. The Zuidwijkring road encircles the district. The Zuiderpark, one of Rotterdam's largest parks, borders Zuidwijk to the west. The Ahoy convention and entertainment centre is nearby.
Metro stations at Zuidplein provide access to Rotterdam's centre, about 5 kilometres north. Barendrecht is directly to the south.
