Zwijndrecht has approximately 45,700 residents and lies in South Holland on the southern bank of the Oude Maas, directly opposite Dordrecht. The two towns are connected by road and rail bridges, with Zwijndrecht station serving as a stop on the intercity line between Rotterdam and Breda. The municipality forms part of the Drechtsteden, a cooperation of six towns sharing the river island landscape of the Zuid-Hollandse eilanden.
The Develgebied, a polder area on the eastern side, provides open green space between the built-up zones. Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht borders to the north, Barendrecht to the west. Chemours (formerly DuPont) operates a chemical plant in the neighbouring Sliedrecht that has drawn environmental attention over PFAS contamination of the region's soil and water.
Rotterdam is about 15 kilometres northwest. Dordrecht's historic centre is accessible by bridge in minutes.
