Breukelen: Vecht River Village That Gave Brooklyn Its Name
Breukelen has about 14,498 residents and lies in the province of Utrecht within the gemeente Stichtse Vecht since 2011. The village sits on the Vecht river, the scenic waterway lined with 17th-century country estates built by wealthy Amsterdam merchants. Breukelen's name was taken to New Amsterdam and later anglicised as Brooklyn when Dutch settlers named their new settlement after this village.
Kasteel Nijenrode, a medieval castle on the Vecht, houses Nyenrode Business University. The river banks between Breukelen and Loenen display some of the finest examples of Vecht manor house architecture in the province. The village centre has a modest commercial strip along the Brugstraat. The flat Vechtplassen area to the northwest, a landscape of peat lakes and polders, provides recreation and nature. The railway station on the Amsterdam-Utrecht line gives Breukelen commuter access to both cities.
Utrecht is about 12 kilometres southeast. Amsterdam lies roughly 20 kilometres northwest. Maarssen is approximately 5 kilometres east.
