Independent until 1974, Hoogland has retained its village identity on Amersfoort's northern edge. The Sint-Martinuskerk and the Hamseweg form the traditional core; community associations keep the local character alive despite surrounding urban expansion. About 10,587 people live here within the gemeente Amersfoort.
North of the village, the Eemland polder stretches flat and open, a Natura 2000 site for dairy farms and meadow birds. The Eem river flows through this landscape. Hoogland's position gives residents access to both Amersfoort's amenities and genuine countryside within minutes.
The Hooglanderveen sub-district to the east developed as a separate settlement. Amersfoort's centre is about 4 kilometres south, Bunschoten-Spakenburg roughly 5 kilometres north.
