Lopik: Polder Municipality Known for Its Broadcast Tower

Lopik has about 14,013 residents and lies in the province of Utrecht in the Lopikerwaard polder between Utrecht and Gouda. The municipality is best known for the Gerbrandytoren, at 375 metres the tallest structure in the Netherlands, used for radio and television broadcasting. The tower is visible from a wide area across the flat polder landscape. The gemeente includes the villages of Lopik, Lopikerkapel, Polsbroek, and Benschop.

The Lopikerwaard is a traditional dairy farming area with characteristic strip parcels, ditches, and farmsteads along the raised dikes. Cheese production has historically been important. The landscape is part of the Groene Hart, the green area between the Randstad cities, and is protected from large-scale development. The Lek river forms the southern boundary of the municipality.

Utrecht is about 20 kilometres north. Gouda lies roughly 20 kilometres west. IJsselstein is approximately 8 kilometres northeast.
