Maarssen has approximately 39,700 residents and lies along the Vecht river in the province of Utrecht. From the 17th century onward, wealthy Amsterdam merchants built country estates along the Vecht between Utrecht and Muiden. Several of these buitenplaatsen survive along the stretch through Maarssen, with their formal gardens backing onto the river. The village centre along the Vecht retains a picturesque character distinct from the newer residential areas built after 1960.
Maarssen merged into the gemeente Stichtse Vecht in 2011 alongside Breukelen and Loenen aan de Vecht. Maarssenbroek, a large post-war neighbourhood on the western side, has a different character: planned, car-oriented, and close to the A2 motorway.
Utrecht's centre is about 8 kilometres south. Amsterdam is roughly 25 kilometres northwest. The Vecht, a slow and winding river, is popular for recreational boating in summer.
